A Conversation with Coach Nick: 10 Years, Countless WODs, and One Very Good Piece of Advice

“For Time” with Myriad – Episode #114

YouTube video

Fair warning: Jared admitted he was nervous going into this episode. That should tell you something about Coach Nick Kramer.

Episode 114 of For Time is a conversation with one of Myriad’s most tenured and beloved coaches, Nick Kramer, who has been part of this community for over a decade. Direct, comedic, occasionally crass, and genuinely one of the best hours you can spend in a gym. Sound familiar? Good. Then you already know Nick.

How It All Started: December 2015, Monon Location

Nick moved to Indianapolis in December 2015 and walked into his first class at the old Monon location. With the CrossFit Total programmed, coached by Jess Kluth, he immediately bonded with member Scott over being one of the taller humans in the room. By March or April of 2016, he was already sitting down with Jared talking about coaching.

The onboarding process? Nick describes it diplomatically as “unstructured.” The official term used was “wung it.” (Yes, as in past tense of “wing it.” Yes, we’re keeping it.)

Before Indianapolis, Nick had been working at Bradley University in Peoria running club sports and recreational programs, got into CrossFit in 2013, earned his L1, and spent about 15 months coaching before making the move to Indy. He’s been coaching here ever since, covering Monon, the old downtown Delaware location, the Capital location, and now the Stutz Building. The man has logged miles across every chapter of this gym’s history.

From Competitive to Community

Nick has watched Myriad evolve from its more competition-focused CrossFit Games era into the community-centered, longevity-first gym it is today, and he’s been all in on that shift. Some of his fondest memories are from the Monon days, coaching Friday afternoon classes and then walking next door to Bent Rail Brewery with the whole group afterward. The workouts were hard, the beers were cold, and the friendships built in those hours are still intact today.

That community thread is what Nick keeps coming back to. As he puts it, his goal every single class is simple: give people the best hour of their day. They come for the physical sweat. They leave with something mental; better mood, better headspace, a little more human connection than they had when they walked in.

His Why — And It’s a Good One

Nick is a father, and somewhere along the way, his fitness philosophy crystallized into something beautifully simple: “be the dad at the pool who can throw his kid the farthest.” 🌊

Not chasing PRs. Not winning every WOD. Just being capable, consistent, and present for the people who matter most. He started showing up at 4:00 AM before 5:00 AM HYROX classes just to get his work in before coaching, waking up at 3:30 to make it happen. Most members never saw it. That’s kind of the point.

His Advice After 10+ Years

If you’re just getting started, getting restarted, or wondering how to make this whole fitness thing actually stick, here’s what Nick says after a decade in the gym:

Make the workout work for you.” You don’t have to hit every prescribed weight or movement. Listen to your body. Scale when you need to. Do one less rep and feel better tomorrow. The goal is to keep coming back, and the only way to do that is to be smart enough not to wreck yourself trying to prove something on a random Tuesday.

Myriad is lucky to have him. And if you haven’t been coached by Nick yet… fix that. 🏋️
