“For Time” with Myriad – Episode #107
This week’s episode of our gym podcast, For Time with Myriad, was a little bittersweet. We sat down with our Spring Intern, Coach Harry, for a proper send-off before he wraps up his CrossFit gym internship and heads back home to New Zealand. Spoiler: we’re going to miss him.
Harry is a senior at IU Indy studying exercise science, and he found us the way all great things are discovered — by spotting our HYROX signs along the Monon Trail. (Marketing works, people.) A competitive golfer on the IU Indy men’s team and a two-time marathon finisher — 1:25 for the half and a blistering 3:06 for the full — Harry came in as a legit athlete. But CrossFit? That was a whole new world.
The Biggest Surprise: It Was Never About the Workouts
The biggest surprise for Harry during his fitness coaching internship wasn’t the movements — it was us. He came in expecting a gym. What he found was a community. Watching different class groups gel, seeing familiar faces push each other, and feeling that electric energy when 20+ people are suffering together through a workout — that genuinely caught him off guard.
Coming from a background of solo gym sessions and small team lifts, the Myriad vibe hit different. And on the training side? Harry went from strict pull-ups on week one (kipping was a complete mystery) to stringing together bar muscle-ups by the end of his internship. That’s the kind of glow-up we love to see. ⭐
The Humbling Moments of Coaching CrossFit
Not everything was smooth sailing. Harry admitted that coaching CrossFit movements you haven’t fully mastered yourself is… a unique kind of challenge. Picture this: Harry, PVC pipe in hand, quietly rehearsing his barbell cues before teaching his first class with Richie breathing over his neck! 🙂
We’ve all been there (okay, maybe not all of us), but the members were gracious, Coach Richie had his back, and Harry leaned into giving solid verbal cues even when the demo wasn’t picture-perfect. That’s real coaching instinct right there.
As for movements he’d rather never see again? Thrusters. Emphatically, absolutely, thrusters. (Honestly, valid.)
What’s Next for Coach Harry
After his Exercise Science internship wraps and he returns to New Zealand in June, Harry has big dreams in the pipeline. He wants to build a sports performance facility with a specialty in golf — combining strength, mobility, and athletic development to help players level up their game in ways the old “just go hit balls” approach never could.
With a Melbourne marathon on the calendar for October and a sharp coaching eye already proven (Coach Jared’s golf swing is a personal testimony), we have zero doubt he’ll make it happen.
Harry, from the coaches to the members — thank you for bringing your energy, your willingness to learn, and your great attitude to Myriad Fitness + Yoga every single day. You came in as an intern and leave as part of the family. Now go crush that Melbourne marathon. 🏃♂️
