Dogs Are Coming to Myriad — And They Need a Home

We’ve had barbells, sleds, rowers, and kettlebells inside these walls. On Sunday, May 31st, we’re adding something new: dogs. Rescue dogs, to be specific and they are available for adoption.

Episode 111 of For Time with Myriad features a conversation with Cora Minkus, co-founder of Red Dog Rescue, a foster-based dog rescue in Indianapolis. Cora and her co-founder Jenny are bringing their dogs to Myriad Fitness + Yoga for a morning of workouts, puppy love, and maybe, just maybe, a forever match.

Who Is Red Dog Rescue?

Cora didn’t follow a traditional path. She went straight from high school to a six-month intensive dog training program in North Carolina covering everything from obedience and behavior modification to police work and search and rescue. She launched her own dog training business, Canine Connected, and over the years noticed a pattern: a lot of rescue dogs weren’t getting adopted because of small, fixable behavior problems. Jumping. Leash pulling. Chaotic first impressions at meet-and-greets.

That’s where Jenny came in. Cora trained one of Jenny’s long-term foster dogs, a sweet guy who just needed a little polish, and he was adopted within a month. The two stayed in touch, and Red Dog Rescue was born.

Where Does the Name “Red Dog” Come From?

The name carries a few layers of meaning. Cora grew up with vizslas named Hazel and Henry, red dogs who sparked her entire career in training. Jenny had her own red dog, Chloe, who inspired her path into fostering. But “Red Dog” also refers to something more serious: the label that shelters give dogs flagged as difficult or dangerous.

Often, those dogs are just scared, undertrained, or barking from a kennel. Everyone walks past them. Red Dog Rescue is specifically about taking those overlooked dogs, training them, and giving them a real shot at a home.

They’re a foster-based rescue, which means no facility, the dogs live in volunteers’ homes, surrounded by people who actually care. They’ve only been operating since last year and are already making a real difference, including getting their very first pull, Tommy, adopted just last weekend.

What’s Happening at Myriad on Sunday, May 31st?

Here’s the plan for the morning at Myriad Fitness + Yoga in Indianapolis:

  • ⏰ 8:00 AM & 9:00 AM classes — Red Dog Rescue will be on-site with adoptable dogs available to meet. Pet them, hang out with them, ask questions. The full rescue team will be there to answer everything. All dogs are available for adoption.
  • ⏰ 10:00 AM class — The dogs get incorporated into the workout. Think less “carry a dog on your back” and more “go for a run, bring a friend.” Low-key, fun, and respectful to both people and pups.

Not a dog person? No worries. Come do your workout and opt out of the chaos entirely. Totally valid. But if you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged member to your household, this is your sign.

How to Adopt a Dog from Red Dog Rescue

All Red Dog Rescue dogs are listed on Petfinder and Adopt a Pet, and their social media is updated regularly with available dogs. The May 31st event is a perfect opportunity to meet the dogs in person before making a decision — no pressure, just a morning of good energy and good dogs.

How to Support Red Dog Rescue Beyond the Event

Can’t adopt right now? There are still meaningful ways to help:

  • 🐾 Foster — even a two-week temporary foster makes a real difference and frees up space for another dog in need
  • 🐾 Volunteer — social media, fundraising coordination, and event support roles are available, many of them remote-friendly
  • 🐾 Follow & share — find Red Dog Rescue on Instagram and Petfinder; sharing their posts costs nothing and gets dogs seen by more people

Red Dog Rescue is a small, volunteer-run organization doing important work with very limited resources. As Cora puts it, they’re currently at capacity not because of the dogs, but because they need more hands. The more people who know about them, the more dogs find homes.

Come out Sunday, May 31st. Bring your post-workout appetite and your open heart. 🐾
